Andrew Smaje

Andrew is an independent theatre producer, mentor and consultant. He works across the UK with a range of theatre companies, organisations, and agencies as well as individual artists and theatre makers.

Recently Andrew has acted as consultant for Plymouth Theatre Royal, Art Prospect, Greyscale, The Spectator's Guild, Oscar Mike and Walking Talking. He mentors many emerging companies and artists, supporting their professional and artistic development. Andrew is a board member of emerging Hull company Middle Child. He is currently producing a new play for Upstart in association with Exeter Northcott Theatre.

Andrew's background is in producing and commissioning new writing (nominated Best New Play, UK Theatre Awards 2011 & 2013) and touring contemporary drama (nominated Best Touring Production and Renee Stepham Award for Touring Achievement, UK Theatre Awards 2003 and 2012). His productions have been seen in every major theatre in the UK.

He was Artistic Director of the Ustinov at Theatre Royal Bath from 2000 to 2010, where he produced world premieres of new plays by Lucinda Coxon, Gregory Burke and Julian Mitchell among many others. He also directed an extensive playwright support programme, as well as creating and directing the Bath Puppet Festival and co-directing the Bath Shakespeare Festival. As Associate Director of the Theatre Royal, he also produced many number one tours. From 2010 to 2012 Andrew was Executive Director of Hull Truck Theatre, commissioning and producing new work by playwrights EV Crowe, Anthony Weigh and Tom Wells and collaborating on new productions with theatre companies such as Rash Dash, Paines Plough, nabokov, The Gate and Headlong.

Andrew has been an Artistic Assessor for Arts Council England since 2009.
