We're currently working on a number of projects, some of which will run indefinitely, whilst others are time limited interventions through which we aim to make a long term impact on the ways in which artists and small companies are supported to make work. There are also a number of new projects in the pipeline which we'll tell you about here as soon as they're more than a twinkle in our eye.

THIS WAY UP: National Tours by North East Artists

Designed to address a lack of producing capacity in the North East This Way Up provides ten North East based artists with dedicated producing support for two years.  Each artist has been paired with a producer through a rigorous matching process and the hope is that a number of those partnerships will continue beyond the life of the programme. This Way Up also aims to develop producing talent within the North East through two tailored traineeships and a Producer Gathering.

This Way Up is produced in partnership with Dance City and has been generously supported by Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and Arts Council England.

Twine started life as a consortium of theatre companies based across the North East that have come together to explore how small touring companies might work together to increase their fundraising capacity. It now takes the form of a range of resources, including a guide for small companies looking to step up their fundraising, and a brilliant film of audiences making the case for touring theatre. You can access all the resources via our Twine page.

We work in partnership with our friends at Live Theatre on an ongoing programme of Scratch Nights and bursaries. Both Scratch Nights and bursaries have a focus on work that takes unconventional approaches to new writing. We take a wide view of what that might mean but it generally means that the work we programme and support doesn't usually begin with a script even though it might end up with one.

With three Scratch Nights each year we bring some of the most exciting artists working in contemporary British theatre to Newcastle, introducing them to Live's audiences and local artists. More information on scratch and bursaries including open calls can be found on our Live Lab page, and for upcoming Scratch Nights check out the events section.

The Empty Space has worked in partnership with Improbable Theatre since 2009 to bring Devoted and Disgruntled to the North East. With three large D&Ds, numerous satellite events and even a virtual, international event, under our belts we have built up an archive of conversations from across the region and across the years.
