The answer to the question “are we for you?” is almost certainly “yes” if you’re an emerging or mid career artist making theatre and looking for help or guidance to move forwards.
The support we offer takes a variety of forms, the first being one-to-one mentoring and advice sessions where we can talk you through a funding application, put you in touch with the relevant venue or programmer, work with you on a press release or simply help you to make sense of what it is you’re trying to do. We say we’ll talk to anyone for an hour (though it’s quite often longer) and we don’t charge for any of that time because we have some very generous funders who also believe it’s critical to invest in the people who are the future of theatre.
We run a series of training and networking events which are intended to give artists in the region the chance to meet and chat and find out stuff. You might come along to our monthly D&D to put the (theatrical) world to rights with like-minded individuals; come and listen to a panel of experts giving you the benefit of their considerable wisdom on topics such as fundraising and touring; or you might attend a workshop on script development . You might even head off to Edinburgh to soak up some of the Fringe atmosphere and get inspired by what’s possible.
We also produce the work of those artists who we think are particularly talented and who are at a point where we believe that an in-depth and ongoing support will make a significant difference to how they (and their work) can develop. This is the only aspect of our work where we don’t provide open access to all, because theatre is a very personal thing and we have to love what we produce or we won’t be able to do it properly.
Just to give you an idea of how one artist was able to develop through the support she received through The Empty Space
